Performance artist Alice Newstead has been working with groups like Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Shark Savers for quite some time now to help raise awareness about the inhumane practices used today for shark hunting. You may remember her being posted here before when she performed a suspension in the front window of Lush Cosmetics. She has continued her efforts to help bring attention to this cause; most recently by taking her powerful display protesting the killing of sharks to Hong Kong.
Their goal with this is to make people aware of what is being done to the shark populations around the world. The two point suspension Alice chose to perform is intended to reflect on the practices used to catch many sharks. Often times lines are put out in the ocean with thousands of hooks, which are used to haul in anything unfortunate enough to be caught by them. The fishermen then remove the fins of the shark they catch and throw them back in the ocean to die a slow and painful death.
During this demonstration, Alice and the members of Shark Savers encouraged those who came to take an active role in the fight to end this cruel activity by refusing to use certain products, such as eating shark fin soup. If you want to hear more about the motivation behind this project, check out the video of her previous suspension at Lush with Sea Shepherds where she explains more about this cause.
